AEW boss Tony Khan has responded to criticism regarding the amount of promo time given to his company’s former champions, CM Punk and Thunder Rosa.
Former AEW World Champion CM Punk and lineal AEW Women’s Champion Thunder Rosa were both forced to step away from in-ring activities in recent months, but the manner in which they announced their hiatuses could scarcely have been more different.
For his injury announcement, Punk was given the opening segment of the June 4 edition of AEW Rampage on TNT, during which he cut an impassioned eight-minute promo and revealed that he needed time off to recover from the foot injury he sustained a few days after defeating Hangman Page for the AEW World Championship at Double Or Nothing on May 31. Rosa, however, was not afforded the same privilege. Instead, the champ was given a brief backstage segment with Tony Schiavone on the August 24 edition of AEW Dynamite on TBS — needless to say, the disparity did not go unnoticed.
“I give the TV time based on what I believe is going to draw the most ratings,” AEW boss tony Khan said During a recent media call ahead of Sunday’s All Out pay-per-view (h/t Fightful). “And if you want my honest opinion on an eight-minute Thunder Rosa promo versus an eight-minute CM Punk promo, then you’re going to get an honest answer. I think the eight-minute CM Punk promo is probably gonna’ do a better rating,” he added. Khan also said that he didn’t learn of Rosa’s injury until shortly before the hsow went live and didn’t have enough time to plan a larger segment.
As you might recall, Jon Moxley defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi at Forbidden Door for the interim AEW World Championship. CM Punk returned to AEW on the August 10 Dynamite and was squashed by Mox on the Aug 24 edition of the same show. Punk will get another shot at Mox in his hometown of Chicago at All Out on September 4.
On the same card, Toni Storm, and Jamie Hayter will compete in a four-way match alongside former AEW Women’s Champions Britt Baker and Hikaru Shida to determine the interim AEW Women’s Champion.
