Weapon malfunction causes girlfriend’s death in Griffith

GRIFFITH — A Gary man was criminally charged after a shooting that resulted in the death of his girlfriend Saturday afternoon, Griffith police said.

Mike Lee, 23, was taken into custody and charged with reckless homicide, a level five felony and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a level four felony, police said Sunday in a news release.

Police responded to a report of a shooting with an injury around 3:15 p.m. at an apartment complex on the 1000 block of East 35th Avenue, the release said. The victim, Lee and another woman were found inside the apartment.

The witness told police Lee was attempting to handle a malfunction of the weapon when it discharged, fatally injuring the woman.

The woman’s identity has not yet been released.
