The rookie first-round cornerback has now stacked three great practices, with Tuesday’s session culminating in his best practice yet. His coverage has been tight throughout training camp, but it’s clear that he’s gaining more confidence to make plays on the ball in those contested coverage situations — and against bigger receivers.
“Trent (McDuffie) has done a great job,” Chiefs DB coach Dave Merritt said. “Trent has competed with the (first team) the entire time. He’s very comfortable out there at the corner spot, as well as the nickel. The thing is that now we have a guy that can actually play dual roles for us, just like LJ (L’Jarius Sneed). He’s very patient at the line of scrimmage and he’s doing a great job.”
In one-on-one’s against Mecole Hardman, McDuffie had both an interception and a pass defended. In team drills against Marquez Valdes-Scantling, he allowed the catch but punched the ball out to force a fumble. It wasn’t just a great day for McDuffie, though. Each of L’Jarius Sneed and Joshua Williams also interceptions during one-on-one drills. It shows that this cornerback group is making some good progress ahead of its first preseason game.
