There have been several incredible streaks in wrestling history, with Goldberg’s undefeated run in WCW being a thing of legend, as was The Undertaker’s 21-0 streak at WrestleMania. In more recent times, Jade Cargill’s run in AEW is perhaps the only thing close to a great streak in modern wrestling, but even that is far off the greats.
Another phenomenal streak took place in WWE, as Asuka walked into NXT, went through developmental, and wrestled a significant amount of time on the main roster before she was finally defeated, with her undefeated streak lasting for a sensational 914 days, which was unlike almost anything else in wrestling. However, there may be some details of her streak that fans have forgotten about.
10 The Streak Began Against Dana Brooke
Asuka’s first match of her incredible streak in WWE took place all the way back in 2015 at the NXT Takeover: Respect event. It wasn’t clear if her streak was the plan all along, but it started in fairly unceremonious and basic fashion, as she defeated Dana Brooke.
Their match was decent, but in terms of what Brooke has done in her WWE career, the match was a fairly low profile way to start such a formidable run in WWE against an underwhelming opponent.
9 Eliminated By Eva Marie In A Battle Royal
Whilst WWE liked to tell fans that Asuka was undefeated for 914 days, she actually came up short in a bout just three months into her time in NXT. In a number one contenders battle royal, Asuka was dumped out of the match by none other than Eva Marie.
With this being a battle royal, WWE could still get away with the fact that Asuka hadn’t been pinned or submitted, but in hindsight it would have been wiser to keep her away from proceedings on that night.
8 Lost In A Live Event Four Way
As Asuka had lost in a battle royal and not a conventional match, the undefeated narrative continued, but per cagematch.net, Asuka actually lost in a fatal four way match on an NXT live event.
The match saw Bayley defend her NXT Women’s Championship against Asuka, Alexa Bliss, and Emma, and whilst Asuka didn’t get pinned or submitted, she still didn’t win the contest.
7 Won A Championship After Just Six Months
Fans will undoubtedly remember the fact that Asuka won the NXT Women’s Championship against Bayley at the NXT Takeover: Dallas event, but fans may forget just how quickly Asuka got to that point.
It had been just six months since Asuka made her debut, jumping up the card remarkably quickly. Not only that, but it was just Asuka’s tenth televised match in NXT, which made her rise to the top feel even more shocking and immediate.
6 Faced Mickie James At A Takeover Event
NXT was on the rise throughout 2016 and 2017, reaching more eyes as they became more of a touring brand. Asuka didn’t just face the likes of Peyton Royce, Nikki Cross, and other favorites of that time, but she also faced a huge returning name in Mickie James.
James had been absent from WWE for a few years by this point, so it was certainly a shock to see her challenge for the NXT Women’s Title. Their match was decent, but James wouldn’t stick around in NXT, instead returning on SmackDown a few months down the line. NXT moved on fairly quickly from Asuka battling a legend, which may mean that some fans forgot about this match.
5 Nearly Turned Heel During Her Streak
Asuka’s reign as NXT Women’s Champion was hugely celebrated, with her being presented as the number one face of the entire division at the time. However, she briefly flirted with the direction of becoming a heel during her feud with Ember Moon.
Moon had proven to be Asuka’s toughest challenger to date, leading to Asuka resorting to nefarious and underhanded ways to keep hold of her title. However, Asuka’s main roster call-up halted their story, with the heel turn never fully explored as she ended her run as a babyface.
4 Highest Rated NXT Women’s Match
There have been some remarkable talents who have come through the NXT system, with the likes of Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch, Io Shirai, Shayna Baszler, and Rhea Ripley competing over the years.
However, when it comes to the NXT women’s match with the highest star rating given by Dave Meltzer, per profightdb.com, it came during Asuka’s streak when she battled Ember Moon at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn 3, as they received 4.5 stars. This would also mark Asuka’s final match before getting her main roster call up.
3 First Main Roster Match Was Against Emma
After relinquishing the NXT Women’s Title, there was some hesitance from fans in regards to Asuka’s undefeated streak as she moved up to the main roster and debuted on the Raw brand.
She kicked off her run again on PPV, this time against Emma at the 2017 TLC event. It wasn’t the most high-profile match, but it was a decent way for her to be introduced to fans.
2 Sole Survivor At Survivor Series
WWE did a fairly decent job of protecting Asuka early, with her first major test coming in the Raw vs SmackDown Traditional Tag Team Match, with five of Raw’s best going against five of SmackDown’s.
Asuka retained her streak by being the sole survivor for Raw, whilst everyone else on her team was eliminated. In the match, she beat Natalya, Carmella, and Tamina, dominating the bout to ensure her team achieved success, and so she remained undefeated.
1 Won The Mixed Match Challenge
Another obstacle emerged in Asuka’s way during her undefeated streak, with that being the Mixed Match Challenge. Asuka would team with The Miz in a duo which had a very intriguing dynamic, as they were on opposite sides of the face and heel spectrum.
They outlasted the likes of Big E & Carmella, Finn Balor & Sasha Banks, Alexa Bliss & Braun Strowman, and finally Bobby Roode & Charlotte Flair in the finals, with the pair becoming the inaugural winners of the Mixed Match Challenge.
