Thousands of punters – and plenty of A-list celebrities – took to the major racing tracks to celebrate Derby Day on Saturday with some stepping out in style and others, sadly, completely missing the mark.

The dress code is strictly black and white – making it one of the most difficult events of the racing season to get wrong because there is a smaller colour palette to choose from. Not an orange blunder in sight.

Unfortunately there were still plenty of slip ups with towering fascinators that detracted from dresses, cleavage-baring V-neck tops and corsets and makeup that looked more Halloween-inspired than Hollywood.

With the Melbourne Cup just days away it’s a last-minute reminder of what to wear – and what to shy away from – this spring racing carnival season. So who made the most of the day?

BEST

The brunette beauty parted the crowds as she sauntered through The Birdcage in form-fitting, strapless dress that showed off her sensational figure.

The black frock featured an asymmetrical neckline as it hugged her waist and flaunted a hint of cleavage.

She wore a pair of long black velvet gloves as she clutched a little Balenciaga handbag while steadying an extravagant wide-brimmed hat perilously balanced at an angle on her head.

Pointed velvet pumps matched her black gloves and she perched a pair of dark cat-eye sunglasses low on her nose, looking over them with a content expression.

Nicole completed the elegant look with a stunning diamond collar necklace that matched the straps on her shoes.

She was not to be outdone by Rebecca Harding who channelled Audrey Hepburn in $1,080 Valentino black silk gloves and a shift dress.

Andy Lee’s girlfriend, 30, opted for a crisp white hip-flare strapless number which she styled to perfection with old Hollywood glamour.

Proving the old adage that less is more, the model let the statement dress speak for itself adding just strappy heels and dazzling earrings.

She styled her hair back into a half-up half-down Bardot style, topping the look off with a pretty black bow.

Elsa Pataky was this year’s special guest and her race day look did not disappoint.

The 46-year-old Spanish actress – and wife of Chris Hemsworth – made an exquisite arrival in a stunning black skirt and corset from Christian Dior.

The mother-of-three couldn’t wipe the smile off her face as she showed off her toned arms as she occasionally rested her hand on her hip.

The star kept her headpiece simple – opting for a classic black brimmed hat from Dior, which gave the ensemble a slightly masculine twist.

Her unique dress featured a belted corset top and a lacy sheer skirt, which created a one-of-a-kind look for the starlet.

Simone Holtznagel had all eyes on her as she flaunted her stunning weight loss alongside boyfriend Jono Castano at the Penfolds Derby Day.

The blonde bombshell, 29, could not wipe the smile off her face as she posed for photos in which she rocked her jaw-dropping physique.

The socialite had guests heads spinning with her chic all-black ensemble comprising of a form-fitting black mesh dress, wide-brimmed hat and slick high heels.

She added a touch of sophistication to her look with designer sunglasses and statement diamond jewellery.

Nadia Fairfax channelled fashion icon Jean Shrimpton on Saturday with the 33-year-old socialite and influencer donning a black mini dress that resembled the famous 60s icon’s white shift she wore to the 1965 Derby Day.

Key tweaks modernised the outfit, but there was no mistaking that Nadia was inspired by the former supermodel, who left the fashion industry to run the Abbey Hotel in Penzance in her early 30s.

Nadia opted for a frock that feature a shapeless tunic over a matching skirt, keeping the hem as scandalously high as her predecessor.

Jean had sparked controversy with her own Derby Day get-up when she stepped out with a hem that sat 4 inches above her knees, while Nadia’s was miles above it, hitting her at mid-thigh.

AFL WAG Tayla Damir and P.E Nation founder Pip Edwards bucked the trend and opted for a masculine look at the weekend event.

The Love Island winner, 25, ditched the frock and dainty heels favoured by many guests for a impeccably tailored suit and tie.

Luxury accessories guru Jaimie Belle Kennedy made sure to turn heads on Saturday at Penfolds Victoria Derby Day in Melbourne.

The 29-year-old showed off her eye-popping cleavage in an all-black gothic-inspired ensemble. The blonde bombshell channelled Madonna’s eighties era in a $2100 black plunging Dolce & Gabbana dress but there was just a little bit too sultry involved in the look for it to be sweet.

Sadly cricket WAG Erin Holland raised eyebrows once she appeared trackside because her gown’s split was just a little bit too high to be comfortable.

The former Miss World Australia, 33, dared to bare in a dress with a dangerously high split that exposed far more than she bargained for.

The frock featured a cream off-the-shoulder bustier with gorgeous ruffles, and she matched it to her cream brimmed hat.

Erin accidentally exposed a little too much as she walked across the grounds of the Flemington Racecourse with a friend.
